Why are my teeth discolored?
Your teeth can become stained or discolored over the years for numerous reasons. If you drink tea, coffee, or red wine, these all contain elements that gradually stain your teeth. If you’re a smoker, nicotine can also discolor your teeth. Trauma, certain medications, and the aging process can also make your teeth look dull and discolored.
The aging process by itself could also be the culprit. When you get older, the inner part of your tooth becomes more visible. This inner part is naturally more yellowish in appearance than the outer layer of enamel.
What kind of teeth whitening is available?
At Dr. Robert C. Dost & Associates, you can have Opalescence® teeth whitening done to remove stains and discolorations. This whitening product has an active ingredient that penetrates your enamel and targets molecules that are stained or discolored.
That ingredient, which is typically either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, spreads these molecules apart, which breaks up areas of stains and discolorations. That process makes your teeth look whiter again.
Do I need to have teeth whitening done at the office?
That’s one of your options with the Opalescence teeth whitening system. In-office treatments contain a 40% hydrogen peroxide gel that bleaches your teeth and helps eliminate tough stains. These treatments typically take about an hour to do.
Keep in mind that you might need multiple treatments depending on how badly your teeth are stained or discolored. Your dentist at Dr. Robert C. Dost & Associates lets you know how many times you’ll need to come in for treatments, though. You can also choose a take home option if that’s your preference.
How does the take home teeth whitening option work?
If you choose the take home option, you’ll get a custom-made tray and bleaching gel. All you have to do is place the tray — with gel in it — inside your mouth for a designated amount of time, and the gel gets rid of stains and discolorations.
The take home option is optimal for subtle stains, but it tends to be ineffective for more noticeable discolorations. Our dental team will let you know which option will work best for you based on how stained or discolored your teeth are.
