Fillings

Fillings

When you have tooth decay, the holes in your teeth render them vulnerable to infection. Tooth fillings seal these holes, which prevents them from getting worse and affecting your teeth’s nerves. Our dental team provides tooth fillings for adults and children in Woodbridge, Virginia who have tooth decay.

Fillings Q &A

Lake Ridge Dental Associates

What causes tooth decay?

Bacteria can build up on your teeth, resulting in plaque, which can cause holes to form in them. (Plaque usually forms when you don’t brush and floss your teeth properly or regularly.)

When tooth decay isn’t treated, you can end up with a toothache or a tooth infection, which increases your risk of tooth loss.

What are tooth fillings?

Tooth fillings are materials that are used to plug up teeth that have been hollowed out from tooth decay. If your dentist at Dr. Robert C. Dost & Associates finds tooth decay or cavities, you can expect to have a filling done in order to cover up any holes that have formed. Keep in mind that the earlier this is done, the lower your chance is of needing larger fillings or a tooth extraction for a severely damaged tooth.

How long do tooth fillings last?

It depends on the material they’re made from and other factors, such as how well you take care of your teeth. Gold, silver, and porcelain fillings usually last longer than composite resin fillings. In general, though, tooth fillings tend to break down over the years, so you’ll need to get them replace eventually. You might also need to have a filling replaced if it cracks or falls out.

What materials are tooth fillings made from?

You can have tooth fillings made from different materials, such as gold, silver amalgam, porcelain, and tooth-colored composite resin. Gold cast and silver amalgam fillings are highly noticeable, while tooth-colored composite resin fillings typically blend in with your natural teeth. Porcelain fillings usually keep their coloring for a longer period of time than composite resin, though, since they’re more stain-resistant.

What can I expect from tooth fillings?

If you need a filling, our dental team  will remove decayed material first to clear the way for it. After this, your tooth will be thoroughly cleaned to remove bacteria before installing the filling. When your tooth is ready, the filling is then placed in the affected areas to fill up holes. You’ll be under a local anesthetic during this procedure, so you don’t have to worry about feeling any pain or discomfort.
